The department's "practice" includes constructing simulation models of real ecological and physiological objects, the carrying of imitating experiments with these models, and the development of pertinent software systems for personal computers and computer networks. Ecosystems of various scale and complexity are among the objects modeled -- from global biosphere to a single living cell. The systems directly relate to people -- from human ecology as a whole, down to various functional systems of the human organism, such as cardiovascular system, respiratory system, gastrointestinal system, immune system.

The Department regularly implements the results of its mathematical modeling activities in medicine to theoretical and practical medicine. The scientific results are used in space biology and medicine, cardiovascular surgery and immunology, cardiac pharmacological therapy and narcology. In addition, the Department maintains and manages the main Russian Federal databases on the environmental and public health management. This includes the Automated State Information System on pollution and health in the Russian cities, the Federal Program on Environmental Safety of Russia.
